Is My Heart Led by My Eyes?

Posted on

For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.

1 John 2:16

The scripture above places all sin into three categories: desires of the flesh, desires of the eyes, and the pride of life. Our spiritual heart is either led by Christ through the Holy Spirit, or it is led by lust or pride. We are created in the image of God with ours heart guided by the Spirit and not from the world. If we interface to the world through the Spirit, we can make Godly decisions for our response. This can enable us to overcome our lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, or pride of life. Today, we will discuss lust of the eyes.

Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness. (Matthew 6:34) This scripture tells us that whatever we see and entertain in our thoughts can bring light or darkness into our soul. Light represents the goodness of God and darkness represents sin from Satan. There are many times when we may entertain darkness that is sinful in the Lord’s eyes, but we see nothing sinful in our own eyes. Anything in our life that has priority over God is considered sinful to God.

I am the Lord thy God! Thou shall have no other gods before me!(Exodus 20:3) We can place the desire for things we see and easily give them higher priority than God. This can happen when we see things of the world more important than seeking God.

Things of the world that we see and want will never fully satisfy our souls; only God through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit can satisfy our soul. The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life. (John 6:63) Only the Spirit can give life to our soul because the Spirit lives within us. It continually feeds our soul with love, peace, and joy — the character of God. While the physical things of the world can only temporarily fill the soul. Our soul seeks eternal love, eternal peace and eternal joy and the things we see in the world can only bring us temporary love, temporary peace and temporary joy.

Today, take control of what you see and let the Spirit control your thoughts from what you see. Our eyes are powerful in trying to control us. If we are one with the Lord and controlled by the power of the Spirit, know that the Lord feeds Heaven to your soul through the Spirit, satisfying your soul more than things of the world.

Prayer: Lord, free me of any worldly desires that I place before you. Fill me with the Spirit so I will always be satisfied and content. In Jesus’ name, Amen
