Guard Your Heart

Posted on

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

Proverbs 4:23

We guard our hearts by guarding our thoughts, because our thoughts reveal our heart. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7) It is important to control our thoughts because God listens to our thoughts. Fortunately, God enables us to control our thoughts which renews or rewires our brains, making it easier to control our thoughts.

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:5). The more we let Christ control our thoughts the more our brains rewire to the mind of Christ, meaning our thoughts move toward Godly thoughts guarding our hearts.

Where we go and who we associate with can have a powerful influence on our thoughts, words, and actions. Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? (2 Corinthians 6:14). We minister to everyone but we are not close friends with everyone, because the company we spend time with can have influence on our heart. The most dangerous people to associate with are false teachers, because their goal is to pull you away from the God’s truth through our fleshly desires.

We spend as much of our time as possible with our Christian brothers and sisters who we know are walking in God’s truth. This will guard our hearts and bring our hearts closer to God, especially when worshipping together. Not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another…. (Hebrews 10:25). The Lord’s plan that keeps us on the narrow road is to fellowship with our Christian family; by worshipping together, praying together, studying scripture together, and ministering to the world together.

In the last days, scripture tells us that deceiving spirits will attack the church by changing our view of scripture so we can justify our will. The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. (1 Timothy 4:1) If we are grounded in the Word we can detect the lies from deceiving spirits who are looking for an inroad into our minds.

Today check that everything you do is according to scripture, living in God’s will. Be alert for deceiving spirits that will try and get a small foothold into your heart.   Pray about decisions and pray that you will never be deceived.

Prayer: Lord guard my heart from deceiving spirits, and help me to stand on the solid foundation of your Word. Guide me to bring your truth to everyone, in the church and in the world. Let the Spirit guide me to searching souls. In Jesus’ name, Amen
