Destroy All Idols
“Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.”
Exodus 20:3-4
Anything that takes priority over God can be consider an idol. We depend on God for everything in our life, and we always live with as thankful heart. Anything in life we take credit for; such as education, possessions, money, physical condition, etc. – we thank God for enabling us to be successful.
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31) Whatever we do in life we give God the glory because he created us and sustains our life. It is easy for us to take credit for our successes, however it is more satisfying to give God the glory, because it draws us closer to the Lord and gives us a truly thankful heart. If we routinely put our will over God’s will, we have become an idol; or if we fail to give God the glory, we have become the idol.
Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you. (Hebrews 13:5) Money can be an easy idol, because people say, “If only had more money.” When we put the Lord first on our life, and follow the Spirit ministering to people, the Lord will provide for your needs. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:33) If we put serving the Lord as our highest priority, God will make it possible to acquire our worldly needs.
We can also put our security in money, possessions, or our job; with a higher priority than God. God enables us to provide these things, and the glory goes to God with a thankful heart. Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:35) When we love the Lord more than anyone or anything, we will have more love for family and the world. Hearts filled with God’s love is the foundation of the Christian life.
Today destroy any idols in your life, and give the Lord the glory for everything. Think carefully what you put your faith in; self, money, possessions, power, or God?
