What Controls Our Thoughts

Posted on

Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!

Psalm 139:23-24

God knows our thoughts, so it is important to control our thoughts they thoughts tell everything about us.  Scripture tells us that God instructs us to control our thoughts and emotions, and we do this through the power of the Holy Spirit. This may seem to be a monumental task, however with the power of God and with a heart of determination, we are promised victory because God never fails.

Satan will use our emotions to have angry sinful thoughts, and that is when we call on the Lord for victory. My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry. (James 1:19).  We must slow down to control our emotions, and we train ourselves to be quick to listen and slow to anger.  This will give us time to access Godly wisdom, which is the beginning of controlling our sinful emotional thoughts.

For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. (First John 5: verse 4).  The world can trigger our emotions. When we let the world control us, then our thoughts are controlled by the world; we have become slaves to the world. Christ sets us free and we fight for this freedom by not letting the actions of others or events in the world take control of our thoughts and emotions, but instead we call on the Lord and for his strength and wisdom to overcome. It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. (Galatians 5:1).

We overcome negative thoughts by communing with the Lord. We meditate on scripture, praise and thank the Lord, and we seek his guidance. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. (Philippians 4:8).  We chose what we thank about, and we refuse to have the incidents in the world control our thoughts and emotions, we refuse to be a puppet on a string controlled by Satan.

We control our thoughts by choosing what we think about, and we should to think on things above. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. (Colossians 3:2) We interface to the world through the Spirit; what we hear goes to the Spirit, and what we think and say comes form the Spirit.

Today control your thoughts through the power of God.  If we can control our thoughts we feel better, more relaxed, and we are generally healthier. Research shows that our thoughts have a direct effect on or health.

Prayer:  Lord, help me today to control my thoughts, to overcome any negative fearful or angry thoughts, and to choose Godly thoughts.  Help me to exchange negative thoughts to thoughts of praise and thanks for freeing me in Christ.  In Jesus name, Amen
