Live by the Spirit

Posted on

Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

Galatians 5>25

The word Spirit in Galatians 5:25 refers to the Holy Spirit that lives in the believer as described in John 14:15-17.  Christians are to live by the Spirit, but what does it mean “keep in step with the Spirit”?

The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. (Psalm 37:23) From this verse we know that the Lord delights in every detail of our life and he is willing to guide our steps in his perfect love. There is nothing in our life that is too small for God and there is nothing in our life to big for God, because all things are possible for God. It is really a blessing knowing God cares and is willing to guide us in making wise choices.

God directs our steps through the Holy Spirit, where we hear God from his Word, from other Christians, and from experiences. We are mindful to seek the Lord’s guidance in the details of our life, and the more we do this the more natural it becomes. I have found that if I commune with the Lord through the day, praising the Lord, thanking the Lord, telling him what’s on my heart, and praying for others, then I am primed to seek his guidance. When events occur such as witnessing to someone, teaching a Bible class, dealing in a business transaction, or making an important decision, then go to the Lord, focused on his wisdom to guide you successfully through the event.

If we seek the Lord’s wisdom, and not yield to our feelings or desires, then he takes an active part in our life. This is what it means to trust the Lord; stepping off the throne and stop being our own God. God will not share his throne with anyone and he guides us when we step off the throne. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. (Proverbs 3:5-6)  You shall have no other gods before me (Exodus 20:3)

Practice going to the Lord for guidance in the choices you make each day.  The words we speak are choices and it will be our advantage to choose our words carefully by seeking Godly wisdom. When making choices seek Godly wisdom and listen to others and value what they say.

Today commune with the Lord and ask him for guidance with your choices, including your words. When we take the time to seek Godly wisdom both in our words and actions, we start to feel the presence of God. This increases our confidence that comes from keeping in step with the Spirit.

Prayer: Today Lord I will keep in step with the Spirit, and help me to hear your divine guidance, that I make wise choices and reflect Christ to others. Thank you for caring about me, and caring about the details of my life, but most of all I thank you for the Holy Spirit, my deposit on eternal life.  In Jesus name, Amen
