Wisdom verses Emotions

Posted on

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6-7

In this scripture God is telling us to come to him for peace when we have anxious moments. We all have emotionally anxious moments. Satan likes to temp us through our emotions, turning our emotions against us. Sometimes our emotions can lead us to say and do things that we may later regret. Everyone has made choices directly from their emotions and reaped bad results. Later we wish we had made a Godly wise decision instead of reacting from our feelings. How can we gain control in our emotional anxious moments, giving it to God so we can receive his peace and respond with Godly wisdom? My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry (James 1:19)

James 1:19 was instrumental for me because before I surrendered to Christ I was virtually controlled by my emotions. Many times I responded strictly out of emotions, saying and doing things that I later regretted. Fourteen years later I have exercised this verse and God’s power through the Spirit has helped me to capture my emotions and thoughts, and respond in Godly Wisdom. Do I do this perfectly? No, but extremely better than before. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:5)

The longer we focus on our emotional thoughts, the more they are magnified in our mind, and they can take control of us. We have control over our thoughts at any given time, which means we can change our thinking. We can do this by doing something different—writing down different thoughts, calling a friend, praying, reading the Word, or talking out loud. These activities can change our state of mind. It can be difficult to change a thought with another thought.

Today make the effort to capture any negative emotions or thoughts and change them to Godly thoughts. Communing with God throughout the day will helps us to be in control, and other people and events want have the power to control us negatively through our emotions. Trust the Lord and notice how he can turn your negative emotion to a positive good emotion.

Prayer: Lord, help me today to be in control of my emotions and my thoughts. Let my thoughts be about you, filled with love, peace, and joy, and confidence and security in Christ. Let joy reign in my heart, knowing whatever happens today, I can exhibit confident control through your love and power. In Jesus name, Amen
