Window to the Soul

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”

Matthew 6:22-23

What we choose to look at and affect our thoughts. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. (1 John 2:16) We guard what we choose to look at so our body and soul will see Light and not darkness.  From the scripture above, the desires of the flesh, desires of the eyes, and pride of life can all work together to lead us into darkness.

Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways. (Psalm 119:37) We turn our eyes from worthless things that can change our heart or lead us to sin.  We look at things that are pleasing to the Spirit and things that will lift us up closer to the Lord.  However, we live in the world and we read, hear, and see sinful things, but we process these things by the Spirit and use them to help us fight this spiritual war. Sinful things are driven by our fleshly desires and our pride. We combat sin by being in prayer, reading the Word, and fellowship with Christians.

Darkness comes when our eyes are controlled by our fleshly desires and our pride. Darkness can be hate, revenge, lust, unforgiveness, or our will over God’s will. If our eyes bring darkness, we can consider that Satan is trying to get foothold in our life.  Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. (1 Peter 5:8) Be alert and control what you let your eyes see and your ears hear. Satan knows our weaknesses and he tempts our pride, the desires of our flesh and the desires of our eyes.

Today, choose what you look at to keep away the darkness.  Let the Spirit control your eyes because your flesh is at war with the Spirit. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. (Romans 8:13) Therefore choose what your eyes look at because it’s Satan trying to get a foothold.

Prayer: Lord, let my eyes never be controlled by my fleshly desires, but to always be controlled by the Spirit.  Prohibit the darkness of Satan from entering into my soul, but let the Light of Christ fill my heart, soul, and body. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
