We Are Brain Surgeons

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Romans 12:2

We are our own brain surgeons because we can rewire our brains by letting God change our thoughts. What we think about the most takes the most real-estate in our brains and what we think about least takes up less and less space.   God has given us the ability to renew our minds and the ability to control our thoughts.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. (Philippians 4:8) We have the ability to change a sinful thought to a Godly thought. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (2 Corinthians 2:10) This is how we renew the mind, by capturing every thought and changing it to the obedience of Christ. This is essential to renewing the mind, because to unwire sinful thoughts in our brains we must stop thinking sinful negative thoughts.

The more we can control our emotions, the more we can renew our minds, because Satan will use our emotions to create sinful thoughts. As our minds renew, our thinking changes, which changes our emotions. First we learn self-control and controlling our emotions, and second we start to take on the emotions of the Holy Spirit. God has emotions just like us, but God has perfect control of his emotions. The Holy Spirit is God and the Spirit has emotions, which helps to overcome emotions that Satan uses to tempt us to sin. Our emotions start to align with God’s emotions and we no longer let our emotions, our words or our actions control us. Godly emotions trigger Godly wisdom.

For as he thinks within himself, so he is. (Proverbs 23:7) The condition of our hearts is reflected by our words, and the Lord looks at our hearts. If we can control our thoughts and emotions, we can control our words and our actions. People evaluate us by our words and our actions. The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things. (Proverbs 15:18) It is very much to our advantage to think and respond in Godly wisdom. As the Lord renews our minds, molding us to have the mind of Christ, our hearts fill with his love, and that is what changes us. With our hearts changing to the heart of Christ, we become Godly people.

Today be aware of every thought and capture any negative, fearful, angry, sinful thought and change it to a Godly thought. Give that negative emotional thought to God and walk in peace with confidence in Christ. The more we can control our thoughts and emotions, the more we can renew our minds; and as the brain rewires to the ways of God, our thoughts become Godly.

Let’s Pray: Lord, help me to control my thoughts and to make them pleasing to you. Give me your power to control my emotions and to overcome Satan’s temptations. Help me to live in the power of the Holy Spirit and to overcome the world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
