The Power of Prayer

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Ephesians 6:12

The power of prayer is in the spiritual world. We are spiritual beings, God and the angels are spiritual, and Satan and his demons are spiritual. When we accept Christ as our Lord and Savior we receive the indwelling Holy Spirit who connects us to God, the controller of the spiritual world. When Christians pray the power of God acts in the spiritual world. If we think and meditate on this blessing, our attitudes about prayer will be changed.

Satan uses our flesh to keep our souls focused on the world. However by focusing on the spiritual world we can fight against the powers of the dark world with prayer. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, (Ephesians 3:20). The Lord’s power works through us and that power is achieved through prayer. Christians must stay connected to the Lord and seek his guidance, and when this happens, God’s power will work both in local ministry and throughout the world. A Christian’s prayers should reflect the fact that there are no physical boundaries to the Lord’s power in the spiritual world.

A Christian needs to pray for people who are near and far, including our missionaries in other countries and for family that live far from us. When we pray God can reach out to the people we pray for; this is an evidence of God’s grace. All of God’s people are connected spiritually through the power of God when we call on him in prayer.

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Our God is sovereign over all creation and he controls everything in the spiritual world, which includes Satan and his demons. The above verse tells us to pray for our leaders and those in authority, because God will guide our leaders by limiting Satan’s influence. Through prayer we have the power of God to change things that we are powerless to do on our own. Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible (Matthew 19:26). When praying, always remember this verse.

Today know the power of prayer, and pray in every situation to seek God’s divine power in your life. Realize that God’s power works through you, and always pray before doing anything. Show your faith and your dependence on the Lord through prayer. He is willing to help you and guide you with his love and power as you serve him today. You shall not fear them, for it is the Lord your God who fights for you (Deuteronomy 3:22). It is the power of the Lord that gives us victory.

Let’s Pray: Lord, help me to be spiritually focused and to depend on you through prayer. Help me in my struggle against sin and to combat warfare in the spiritual realm. Only the Spirit has the power to overcome sin in our lives and in the lives of others. In Jesus name, Amen
