The Fruit of Self Control

Posted on

Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.

Proverbs 25:28

Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit and is needed by every Christian to control their thoughts, words, and actions. If we take a close look at Jesus we can see that he was always in control, and how can we conform to the image of Christ without self-control?

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-control. (2 Timothy 1:7) How can we overcome Satan’s temptations without self-control. We call on the Lord to give us self-control, because Satan wants us to live by our physical desires. Satan tempts us in many ways to take away our self-control; driving, arguments, lack of patience, anger, or things not going my way.

Satan will use our emotions against us by causing us to not have self-control. Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified. (1 Corinthians 9:26-27) Christians control the sinful desires of the body, which craves things of the world. We can be considered as our worst enemy because we have free-will; and that is why we pray for the power of self-control.

A person who lacks self-control, is like city with its walls broken through. A person without self-control is person who often exhibit a lack of control. How does self-control tie in with the rest of fruit of the Spirit. How can we always express kindness, love, peace, without self-control? How can we remain calm in all situations without self- control?

God wants all Christians to have self-control in all areas of their life, and to remain calm and walk with Godly wisdom. Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not give the devil an opportunity. (Ephesians 4:26-27) Unrighteous anger can destroy our self-control, both in our minds and in our actions. Self-control requires that we control our emotions that can drive us into sinful actions.

Today exhibit self-control and walk in peace with the Lord. Do not let Satan in any way take control of your emotions, but ask for the power of God to control the flesh.

Prayer: Lord increase my self-control every day, so I can walk in peace. And don’t let Satan take control of my emotions. In Jesus name, Amen
