Spiritual Blindness

Posted on

The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.

1 Corinthians 2:14

The spiritually blind are simply unable to understand and believe God’s Word. They view everything from a worldly perspective and fail to see things from a spiritual perspective. Through the truth of God’s Word, we have the wisdom to understand people and the world, because we see from a spiritual view. Most of the world is spiritually blind and can only see things from a worldly view, living by Satan’s lies. In the Gospels the Pharisees were people who were spiritually blind because they believed Satan’s lies.

The spiritually blind consist of people who refuse to believe, and also believers who are partially blind, not living wholly by the Truth. Go to this people and say, You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes (Acts 28:26-27). A person who is spiritually blind is in danger of developing a hardened heart and never perceiving or understanding God’s Truth.

If a person is spiritually blind they default to living in their own worldly truth, because they don’t know God and His Truth. They will live their lives following Satan’s lies. For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear (2 Timothy 4:3). The goal of Satan and his demons is to keep us from knowing God, and to lead us to search the world for people whose words will satisfy our itching ears.

How do we help people who are spiritually blind? Since we are in a spiritual war, lots of prayer and a heart full of love is needed when ministering to them. Love is the only thing that will soften a hardened heart of one suffering from spiritual blindness. We have to be the light that opens up a spiritual vision to them.

Spiritually blind hearts are usually created from a person’s past. Therefore, the more we understand the person’s past the more we can help them. This takes prayer, understanding, wisdom, empathy, and time, because we can be, inadvertently, treading on their emotionally sensitive past. Professional Christian counseling is a beneficial method of uncovering a person’s past. It is a great achievement if you can minister to someone and get them to see a Christian counselor.

Today, take notice of people who are spiritually blind; those who refuse Christ. Pray for them and treat them with loving kindness. Ask the Lord for guidance and wisdom if the opportunity to minister to a spiritually blind person with a hardened heart is presented to you.

Let’s Pray: Lord, help me to never be spiritually blind but open my heart that I may live fully in your truth. Open my mind to see everything from a spiritual perspective; to see from your view, to see the world through the heart of Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
