Seek the Power to Overcome

Everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.

1 John 5:4

From this verse, we are told that we can overcome the world and our sinful habits. We overcome with the power of God and the power of our faith. We ask the Lord for his judgment of our life, to reveal anything that is not pleasing to him.  If we are doing something that’s not pleasing to Him, it will limit the power of God in our life.

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us. (Ephesians 3:20) If we ask for His power, especially in the moments of temptation, Christians have the power from Christ to overcome. God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. (1 Corinthians 10:13) The Lord gives us his power to endure because Satan’s temptations can be very powerful in our mind and on our emotions, but the Lord’s power is infinitely more powerful.

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:5) When tempted, we immediately capture and demolish the sinful thought. If we don’t immediately capture the thought, it will be conceived in our minds and trigger our emotions. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. (James 1:15) Once sin is conceived in the mind and with emotions, it gives birth to sin, and Satan has a victory in our life. If we continue to give Satan victory over us, sin will become full grown and lead us to spiritual death.

We are severely limited if we don’t realize the power the Lord gives us. If we don’t ask for the Lord’s power to overcome, then we are seeking to overcome with our own power.  Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. (Proverbs 3:5-6) If we don’t ask the Lord for his power to overcome when temptation occurs, then are we are leaning on our own understanding?

Today, know that you have the power of God to overcome the world. Do not let take Satan take control of your thoughts and emotions.  Instead, pray for the Lord’s power when temptations occur. You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. (1 John 4:4) For every temptation, the Lord has provided an escape.  We have the power of Christ in us that has infinite power over Satan.

Prayer: Lord, guide me in the Spirit to live in your power, and to always ask for your power when Satan’s temptations occur. I know that I can always find an escape through the Word with your love and power. In Jesus’ name, Amen
