Read the Word with Christ

Posted on

For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.

1 Corinthians 2:11

The Holy Spirit enables us to understand the Word and Christ speaks thoughts to us through the Spirit. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. (John 16:13) The Spirit only speaks what he hears, which means we communicate with Christ through the Spirit.  The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. (1 Corinthians 2:14)  The Word is spiritually discerned and the Spirit does not speak on his own but only what he hears from Christ.

Therefore, each time you read the Word know you have a direct connection to Christ.  Pray before reading and ask Christ for divine understanding.  Commune with Christ while reading the Word, and pray after reading thanking the Lord for his divine help in deep understanding.  Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.  (Matthew 7:7-8) It is important that we ask the Lord for divine understanding of the Word because it shows we seek his wisdom and helps us to understand the meaning of scripture to our lives. It’s good to have insight and understanding of scripture, but what good is scripture if it doesn’t relate to our life, and if we cannot teach it to others?

He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. (Revelations 19:13) This verse implies that judgment is based on the Word of God. It’s not based directly on what we know from the Word, but it’s based on living by the Word. We read scripture, relate to knowing God and how it affects our life.  The church is to make disciples for Christ, and we do that through the Spirit who opens Word into our life.

Today, invite the Lord into your Bible reading and know he is there to communicate his thoughts into your mind through the Spirit.  The Lord is always there to guide you, especially when reading his Word.

Prayer:  Lord, guide me when I seek your help while reading your Word.  I need to know how each scripture speaks to me and it affect on my life.  In Jesus name, Amen
