The Power of the Spirit’s Conviction

Posted on

When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment:

John 16:8

The Holy Spirit convicts for the purpose of making us more Christ-like. If we desire to be more Christ-like and more pleasing to the Lord, then shouldn’t we be open to the Spirit’s conviction? Conviction can be more than overcoming a sinful behavior but it can be anything that brings us closer to the Lord, such as more Bible study, more prayer, more encouraging, or reflecting more of God’s love. The list is endless as we are in a process of becoming more Christ-like.

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. (John 16:13). The Lord uses the Spirit to guide us through life and he using conviction to keep us on the narrow road to life. He disciplines us through the Spirit to keep us from justifying Satan’s lies into our life. The Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son. (Hebrews 12:6). Just as a loving parent disciplines their child, the Lord perfectly disciplines us because of his love for us.

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you (Psalm 32:8). Seek the Lord’s perfect guidance with open hearts to the Spirit’s conviction. We are not perfect people and we cannot perfectly follow the Spirit, but if we listen for the Spirit’s conviction he will tell us when we deviated from God’s plan for our lives. This is critical because Satan’s goal is get a sinful foothold so we deviate or delay God’s plan in our lives.

Today be open to hear the Spirit, especially for any conviction, because the Spirit tells us what is to come so we can prepare. Seek the Spirit’s guidance and know the Spirit is always with you. Commune with the Lord and ask him for help in following the Spirit.

Prayer: Keep my mind and heart open for whatever the Spirit says so I can be pleasing in your site. Help me to be led by the Spirit and to know the Spirit’s language, the Word. In Jesus name, Amen
