Why People Avoid the Truth

Posted on

We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.

1 John 4:6

When ministering to others have you ever noticed how people refuse to listen to God’s truth? I have often encountered situations where people will avoid the truth because it doesn’t agree with their justified lifestyle. They seem to think that if they avoid the truth it will go away, out of sight out of mind. The reality is that God’s truth remains whether we avoid it or disagree with it.

People that haven’t accepted Christ have no knowledge of the truth, and by default are living by Satan’s lies. Some people have a little knowledge of the Truth but avoid the full truth because it conflicts with their lifestyle. They avoid the truth because they are uncomfortably convicted, and they close their eyes and ears thinking it will go away. For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them (Matthew 13:15).

Many people think they are living life to the full, but they have never experienced living by the truth and being one with God. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full (John 10:10). Many people refuse to live in God’s truth and they will never have life to the full. Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven (Matthew 7:21). How can we do the will of the Father unless we live by God’s truth?

If we open our hearts and seek God’s truth we can live life to the full. If people had the faith to fully live by the truth and desired to be closer to the Lord by serving him, they would experience the blessed life the Lord has for them. But Satan seeks to have people justify their own truths, with a comfortable conscience believing they are pleasing to God and heaven is their home. Remember Satan is the father of lies and is happy when we believe his lies. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies (John 8:44).

Today make up your mind to trust the Lord and to live by his truth. Seek his truth through the Word and strive to live according to his divine will. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:32). Knowing the truth you can live free in Christ.

Let’s Pray: Lord, open my heart so that I am living by your truth and help me to tell others of your truth and the good news of Christ. Give me faith to live fully by your Word, by your truth. In Jesus name, Amen
