Light of the World

Again, Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

John 8:12

Jesus is saying he is the Light of the world and if we follow him, we will not walk in darkness. If we remain in the Light, we cannot be in the darkness.  Jesus is now in Heaven with the Father, but his Spirit lives in our hearts. He guides through the Holy Spirit, and now we are the Light in this world.

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16) Our good deeds come from reflecting Christ’s love and compassion to all people. We are a Light in this world taking away the darkness from Satan.

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. (Ephesians 6:12) This verse is important because if our struggle is with people, it will be difficult to be a light for them. Our war is with Satan and not people because he has deceived many people in this world. God loves all people but unless they accept Christ, they will die in their sins.  We love all people, and we don’t want them to die in their sins.  That’s why our hearts seek to bring God’s truth to all people, so they will stop believing Satan’s lies. We are in a spiritual war over lost souls; Satan feeds darkness to people and we feed Light to people.

If we follow Christ through the Holy Spirit, we will have the Light of life.  Christ is the light in us, and his power works in us. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us. (Ephesians 3:20) We depend on Christ guiding us through our days so we can have his power to be a divine Light.

Today, walk with Christ and reflect the Light of life. Pray for an opportunity to tell someone about salvation through Christ.

Prayer: Lord, guide me through the Spirit to be a Light to others.  Fill my heart with your love and compassion for everyone. In Jesus’ name Amen.
