Knowing God

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom

Isaiah 40:23

How can we have a close relationship with the Lord if “his understanding no one can fathom”? What does the Lord want us to know about him, to understand about him? From the life of Jesus we can understand the heart of God and know his love and his faithfulness. If we understand what the Lord wants us to understand, then our hearts will be able to fully trust him.

The most important thing to learn about our Lord is his perfect love. The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness (Jeremiah 31:3). When we trust the Lord and follow his good, pleasing and perfect will, we reap the blessings of God’s love. Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him (Psalm 34:8).

It is necessary for our faith that we know God’s love and faithfulness from his Word. We may not understand all of God’s ways, but we can trust his ways if we know his love and faithfulness. It is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, (Hebrews 6:18-19). From the Word we see God never lies and his truths always become reality. When the Israelites obeyed the Lord they reaped the blessings of his promises, and when they walked away from God and worshipped false gods they reaped the consequences of God’s promises, and were attacked and enslaved by their enemies.

Since we know the Lord’s promises, we ought to pray using his promises and live in obedience to his will; then we will reap the blessings of God. God wants us to know his love and faithfulness so that we trust him. We can read about God’s love and faithfulness throughout the Bible, and those who believe his promises can walk in faith that pleases the Lord. The Lord reveals his love through his relationships in the Old Testament; in the New Testament he reveals his love through the life and sacrificial death of Jesus on the cross for our sins. He has given us all we will ever need to trust him fully.

Even when we don’t understand his ways, we trust God and his ways. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts (Isaiah 55:9). It is a blessing that his ways and thoughts are above our ways and thoughts, otherwise he would not be God. We actually trust God more because his ways and thoughts are above ours and we know all things are possible for God.

Today know that God loves you beyond your imagination and that he wants to bless you as you walk in obedience to his will. So today, be uplifting and a light to everyone you see. Take the Lord’s love and joy wherever you go.

Let’s Pray: Lord, help me to trust you more today than yesterday and to walk in obedience to your will, guided by the Holy Spirit. Fill my heart with your love, peace, and joy and help me to reflect it to everyone today. In Jesus name, Amen
