Jesus’ Last Lesson to His Disciples

Posted on

“If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.”

John 14:14-17

Jesus gave His disciples this lesson because He knew he was leaving the earth and would no longer be with his disciples in person.  He was telling His disciples and He is telling us, that His spirit will be with us and He will guide us through the Spirit. It is essential that we learn to follow Christ through the Spirit. Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” (Luke 9:23) We can’t see Christ and we can’t audibly hear Christ, so how can we follow Christ through the Spirit?

The Greek word for another is “allos,” which implies that the Holy Spirit within us is like having Jesus with us. From the Greek version of John 14:15, God sends the Spirit to enable us to follow Christ. The Spirit brings the life of Jesus in us.

Can we follow Christ through the Spirit as if Christ is with us in this world? If we desire to follow Christ through the Spirit, it starts by being motivated and through prayer because we need the Lord’s divine power to follow the Spirit. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. (Romans 8:14 ESV) The Word reveals that the Lord calls us to follow the Spirit, therefore if we pray for His help and we are motivated, it will happen. We must have the Lord’s power to achieve His commands.

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. (Matthew 7:7-8) If we ask the Lord for the Spirit’s guidance when making choices, he will reveal the answer.  The more we know the Word, the more guidance we will recognize. We must ask for guidance to show we desire to follow Christ. The Lord may change the desire of our heart, he may place thoughts in our minds, or he may have a Christian brother or sister bring His message to us. We will be comfortable with many choices and uncomfortable about other choices.  When we are uncomfortable, we ask the Lord for His guidance.

Today, ask God to help you follow Christ through the Spirit. Be still inside and patient to receive the Lord’s message in your heart or in your thoughts. Always pray and reveal the desire of your heart and ask the Lord for His approval or disapproval.

Prayer:  Lord, help me to follow the Spirit so that my life will be pleasing to You. Everyday teach me to follow the Spirit until it becomes natural. Thank you for guiding me through life by the Spirit.  In Jesus name, Amen
