Hearing the Spirit

Posted on

Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

Galatians 5:25

How can we keep in step with the Spirit if we cannot hear the Spirit? The Word tells us the Spirit will guide us, but how can we be guided without hearing the Spirit? Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia. (Acts 16:6) How did the Spirit tell Paul and his companions to not go into the province of Asia?

Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. (1 Corinthians 15:58) This verse inspires the motivation to hear the Spirit, a strong desire to hear the Spirit. The more we desire to hear the Spirit, the more we pray to hear the Spirit, the more we will hear Spirit.

In order to hear the Spirit, we must learn the language of the Spirit, the Word. Everything we hear from the Spirit will relate to the Word and the Word is spiritually discerned. The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. (1 Corinthians 2:14) The Spirit enables us to understand the Word so we can hear the Spirit.

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.(Matthew 7:7) We commune with the Lord during our day and we ask the Spirit to guide our thoughts and words. When ministering to others, if we ask, the Spirit will guide our thoughts and lead us to scriptures. The more we depend on the Spirit, the more he will guide our thoughts and convict us when we go in the wrong direction.

The Spirit will guide our thoughts and our emotions, in all situations to be Christ-like. If we are still inside seeking Godly wisdom we will be better able to hear the Spirit. He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”  (Psalm 46:10) Hearing the Spirit becomes easier, the more we know the Word, the more we depend on the Spirit, and the more our hearts are filled with his love.

When I minister to others is when I call on the Spirit for understanding. Today in a Bible class, I could not understand what David was saying in a psalm. I prayed and immediately the Lord gave me understanding, and everyone in the class agreed. It was extremely pleasurable and exciting when I received the answer from the Spirit.

Today, pray for the Lord’s help in hearing the Spirit because the Lord wants you to hear the Spirit. It is rewarding when we hear the Lord’s divine love and power, guiding us through the Spirit. When we hear the Spirit, we are living in God’s wisdom and power.

Prayer: Lord, help me to know your language, the Word, and to always be still inside and hear the Spirit, either in my thoughts, through my conscious, or through your Word. In Jesus name, Amen
