Guided by the Holy Spirit

Posted on

But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.

John 16:3

The purpose of the Holy Spirit is to guide us through life.  The Spirit will not speak on his own, but Christ speaks to us through the Spirit and we speak to Christ through the Spirit. If we depend on the Spirit to guide us, we ask for guidance as we go through each day.

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. (Matthew 7:7-8) The most important thing we ask for is guidance by the Holy Spirit. The more we depend on the Spirit and the more we know the language of God (the Word), the better we can follow the Spirit. The Spirit places thoughts in our minds, and he changes the desires of our hearts.

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. (Romans 8:14) God sends the Spirit to live in the believer so we can be guided by Christ. But it’s up to us to seek and pray for guidance by the Spirit, to be still inside and be aware of our thoughts and desires. If we live detracted by the world, it can be difficult to hear the Spirit. If our thoughts are on things above, and we live by the Spirit as our interface to the world, we will better able to hear Christ speaking to us through the Spirit.

And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. (Romans 5:5) God’s love comes to us through the Spirit, and when we follow the Spirit, His love goes from our minds into our hearts. When our hearts change, we have changed.

Today pray for guidance by the Spirit, and be aware of your thoughts and changes in the attitude of your hearts. Also listen to divine guidance from mature Christians.

Prayer:  Help me to seek guidance by the Spirit, and to be still inside. In Jesus name, Amen
