God Looks at the Heart
The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.1 Samuel 16:7
Do you find it confusing that God says we are not saved by works, but instead he looks at or heart? For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. (Ephesians 2:8-10) The reason God looks at our heart is because we live out of heart and it reveals everything about us. We can manipulate and fool people, but God always knows the truth about us.
If you want to examine your own heart simply keep track of your thoughts. Do you have a heart for God or do you have a heart for the world, it’s all revealed by your thoughts? Your thoughts will dictate your words and actions. The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. (Genesis 6:5) The Lord knows our heart by listening to our thoughts, and our thoughts are our spiritual connection to God. Therefore know that your sinful thoughts don’t remain just within yourself, they are broadcast to the Lord in heaven.
Our thoughts are controlled either from the world or from God through the Spirit. It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. (Galatians 5:1) The world can control our thoughts through the desires of the flesh, programming our brains to the sinful ways of the world. Therefore when someone criticizes us, when we have a sinful desire, or when we experience trials in life, we respond based on how our minds have been programmed by the world, otherwise known as learned behavior. This is the yoke of slavery or bondage to the world.
How do we reprogram our mind and get control of our thoughts? Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:2) What we think about most gets wired into or brain and what we think about least gets unwired from our brain. Therefore in order to change our thoughts, we fellowship with Godly people, read the Word, and pray. This will change our thinking and start to change our heart, but to have a heart for the Lord we must experience God in our lives. We can only do this by obeying his will to minister to others in this lost world. We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. (1 John 2:3)
God’s divine power gives us the ability to control our thoughts and our emotions. We are now free in Christ and no longer a slave to the world. For everyone born of God overcomes the world. (1 John 5:4)
Today remember that the Lord knows your thoughts, which reveals the reason for everything you say and do. Realize your thoughts are the spiritual connection to God, and change any thoughts that aren’t pleasing to God. Refuse to let the world control your thoughts, words, and actions but instead respond with Godly wisdom.
Prayer: Lord, today give me a pure heart, a heart that is pleasing to you. Fill my heart with your love and compassion, and fill my mind with your wisdom. Continue to mold me to the heart of Christ. In Jesus name, Amen
