How We Get to Know God

Posted on

I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me.

The more we are motivated to know God, the more we will seek him, and the more he will reveal himself to us. Understanding our Lord is an ongoing spiritual growth process that comes through reading and meditating on his Word, prayer, fellowship with our Christian brothers and sisters, and walking in obedience to his loving will. If we are complacent in our desire to know the Lord, we will stagnate in knowing him and in our spiritual growth. The more we are motivated to be closer to our Lord the more he will reveal himself to us.

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart (Jeremiah 29:11). If our hearts are devoted to seeking the Lord over and above anything else in life, then we will find the Lord and obtain more understanding of his heart. If our hearts are divided, giving things of the world priority over seeking and serving God, then it can be difficult to get closer to the Lord. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, (Colossians 3:23). This verse tells us how to live for the Lord, serving the Lord in everything we do.

The Lord looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God (Psalm 14:2). The Lord is pleased when we are seeking to understand him more. We seek the Lord by reading and meditating on the Word, praying and communing with him through our days, worshipping the Lord in fellowship, walking as Jesus walked, and being a light for Christ in this world. All of these are necessary if we are seeking to know the Lord; we are to be Christ-like in this world as the Lord renews our minds and hearts to that of Christ. As his love fills our hearts, we become closer to the Lord because God is love. The more of God’s love that fills our hearts, the more like-minded we are with the Father and the Son.

Today seek to be closer to the Lord; pray and commune with the Lord throughout the day. Praise him, give him thanks, and seek his guidance. Let his love in your heart flow to others, through kindness and encouragement. The more we are Christ-like the closer to Christ we will be.

Let’s Pray: Lord, draw me closer to you as I seek to be Christ-like today. Let the Spirit fill my heart with your love so that I can reflect it to others. Light a fire in my soul so the light of Christ will reflect through me and take away any darkness that I encounter today. In Jesus name, Amen.
