From Here to Eternity

Posted on

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

Colossians 3:2

Yesterday I watched the movie From Here to Eternity and the Lord reminded me that we are temporarily here on earth but we are all moving toward eternity. Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes (James 4:14). This verse touched my heart and helped me to realize how short life is and that I should look forward to eternity.

Our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ (Philippians 3:20). Life is living as an ambassador for Christ while living in a foreign country, and when our assignment is over we go home. When we live knowing that Heaven is our home we live with peace and joy, and we overcome the world knowing everything in this life is temporary.

When our minds are set on things above, we are in the Spirit looking down on the world from a heavenly view. We are in the world but we are not part of the world because Heaven is our home. It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery (Galatians 5:1). Living with eternity in our hearts is a big help in being free in Christ and no longer in bondage to the world.

He has also set eternity in their heart, (Ecclesiastes 3:11). God has set eternity in our hearts and when we set our minds on things above and strengthen our connection to the Lord through prayer and Bible study, we reach a new level of love, peace, and joy. Things of the world take on less meaning, while things of God take on more meaning. We essentially move our souls more toward God by living for eternity. The fear in our hearts tends to further disappear as we become eternally minded.

Today realize that while you are here on earth, your life is a vapor and you are moving toward eternity. Keep your thoughts on things above and enjoy the peace and joy of being close to the Lord. Satan will try to keep all your thoughts away from God and on the world, but look at the world through the eyes of Christ and interface to the world through the Spirit.

Let’s Pray: Lord, fill my mind and heart with the joy of Heaven and let me live for eternity. Help me to remember that I am here in this world for a short time and prepare me for eternity with you in Heaven. Mold me to be more like Christ so I can know you better. In Jesus name, Amen
