Control Your Thoughts with the Power of Christ

Posted on

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.

Proverbs 23:7

Our thinking can affect our attitude, our feelings, and our emotions. Our thoughts can be controlled by Christ through the Holy Spirit or our thoughts can be controlled by the world. We live in this world, but if we respond to the world through the Spirit, we will have the power of the Lord’s love and wisdom.

“As we think, we change the physical nature of our brain. As we consciously direct our thinking, we can wire out toxic patterns of thinking and replace them with healthy thoughts.” (Caroline Leaf, Switch on Your Brain) Our brain is wired based on our thoughts and if we think about things above our mind is rewired to the ways of God which brings peace to our soul. Toxic thoughts such as fear will, over time, cause adverse effects to our physical heath.

It is critical that we let Christ control our thoughts because it affects our attitude and our health.  Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. (Colossians 3:2) We are created by God and when we think on things above it helps us mentally and physically. We become filled with peace, joy, and we are relaxed and secure in Christ.

The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7) Our thoughts influence how we feel, and God knows our heart by listening to our thoughts.  Our thoughts give the reason for everything we do. For example, we serve the Lord from a heart of love, otherwise they become just works.

Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. (James 1:26)  We can keep a tight rein on our words if we have a Godly heart and we take control of our emotions. Satan tempts us through our emotional desires, but if we are quick to listen and slow to respond we can speak with Godly words. We always need to speak what is pleasing to the Spirit, and we cannot let our emotions bypass the Spirit.

Today, seek spiritual guidance for your words and don’t let the world take control of your thoughts or words. Use the Holy Spirit as a filter between your soul and the world. Filter every thought to the obedience of Christ.

Prayer:  Lord, help me to control my thoughts and my emotions. Guide me to be still inside and slow down my life so I can have peace and joy from the Spirit. I was not created to rush through life.  In Jesus’ name, Amen
