Christ Will Set Us Free

Posted on

So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

John 8:36

True freedom for our eternal soul only comes from Christ.  It can never come from the world and the freedom from Christ does not depend on what is happening in the world. Our freedom in Christ increases as our loving relationship with the Lord increases.

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. (Galatians 5:1) We are either a slave to the world or we are free in Christ. Our spiritual soul is free while our flesh lives in the world.  However, our free soul can set our flesh free from the world. The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? (Psalm 118:6 ESV) Christ was absolutely free, but he gave his life on the cross for our sins. Christ was free in his divine Spirit even though he knew his flesh would die on the cross.

If we are not free in our spiritual soul, then we are not free. Our flesh comes from the world and returns to the world; while our soul is from God and returns to God.  We place emphasis on our eternal soul, and we take care of our flesh. We are created to care for our flesh because it is the temple for the Spirit.

The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. (Romans 8:6) Freedom in Christ requires that we are governed by the Spirit, and not by the flesh. Christ guides us through life via the Spirit, and we interface to the world through the Spirit. Whatever we see or hear, we take it to the Spirit, and we respond from the Spirit. We develop the habit of doing this at all times because it helps to free us from the world.

You shall have no other gods before me. (Exodus 20:3) If we have anything that has priority over Christ, then we can identify it as a god. In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples. (Luke 14:33) Living life to the full only comes when Christ takes priority and He becomes our life. If we love God more than anyone or anything, then we will have more love in our hearts to bring to the world.  If we desire to be free, then we need to be closer to the Lord than we are to the world.

Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. (Matthew 10:28) Through Christ, we have overcome death which is big step in being free from the world. Just as Christ sacrificed his physical life for our sins, many people today are sacrificing their life for Christ.  Serving as ambassadors for Christ, we see Heaven as our home and this life as temporary.

Today, seek to give Christ priority and live for your eternal life. When we are free in Christ, we have overcome the world. Everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. (1 John 5:4)

Prayer:  Lord, guide me in the Spirit to be free, governed by the Spirit and not by the world. In Jesus’ name, Amen
