Carry a Two-Edged Sword

Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Ephesians 6:17

Every Christian is in a spiritual war and we need to fight Satan’s temptations with a two-edged sword, the Word of God.  For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12)

Jesus fought Satan with the Word of God. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:3-4) Jesus used his two-edged sword to defeat Satan because Satan will twist the Word to deceive us. Satan tried to twist scripture in tempting Jesus, but Jesus was perfectly knowledgeable about the Word and responded to Satan’s deceptive ways with truth from the Word.

We all have a two-edged sword and we learn be proficient in using our knowledge of the Word.  We train our use in our two-edged sword by using it in battle. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, (2 Timothy 3:16) We learn to use our two-edged sword in teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness. This is the power of scripture because it is the Word of God and the Word is alive.

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. (Psalm 119:105) The power of the two-edged sword is needed to light our path. Knowing the Word is powerful in scripture and is powerful in changing us. The closer we are to Christ, the more love we have in our hearts, the more we know the Word, the more powerful our two-edged swordNow to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, (Ephesians 3:20) It’s the power of Christ in us that gives power to our two-edged sword.

Today, carry your two-edged sword and use it with a heart of love.  We fight the Spiritual war with our sword and the power comes from a heart of love. However, use the Word fight to Satan’s temptations with a determination of victory and with a hatred of sin.

Prayer:  Lord, fill my mind and heart with your Word and with your love. Guide me in the Spirit to use the two-edged sword to bring people to Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen
