Be First, Be a Servant

Posted on

Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, "Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all."

Mark 9:35

How can being a servant of all make us first in our own minds? He made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness (Philippians 2:7). Jesus humbled himself and became a servant, even to death on a cross, yet he always knew he was God. If we realize who we are in Christ we can be a servant just like Jesus.

To be a servant is to serve the Lord as his ambassador. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us (2 Corinthians 5:20). When we see ourselves as ambassadors representing Christ to the world, we become servants for the Lord, and able to minister to lost souls. Our identities are in Christ, which makes us secure and confident in proclaiming the power of the Lord.

When we are secure in our Godly identities and in our divine purposes, it is easy to have a servant’s heart. Serving others with a loving caring heart is how we bring truth and love to people, but if we try to dominate and overpower others, our ministries will fail. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another (John 13:35). It is God’s love that softens the heart.

Each of us is a servant for the Lord, the creator of heaven and earth, and this is the greatest job to have on the face of the earth. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it (John 17:16). This verse means that we can be closer to the Lord than we are to the world, knowing that Heaven is our home. We are the Lord’s ambassadors and we exist to bring lost souls into the Kingdom. Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve (Colossians 3:23-24). We eagerly serve to perform our divine tasks through the power of Christ. The world sees a servant as last, but from the Kingdom perspective, a servant for the Lord is first.

Today live as a humble secure servant for the Lord and don’t let Satan attack you with pride. Our pride is in Christ who sustains us through everything in life with his perfect love and infinite power. Today stand secure and confident in Christ and live in his love, wisdom, and power.

Let’s Pray: Lord, help me to be secure and confident as I serve you today. Kill any attack of prideful behavior and replace it with peace and joy from a humble heart. Lead me today in the Spirit to be your servant, reflecting your love, compassion, and wisdom to everyone. In Jesus name, Amen.
