Be First, Be a Servant

Posted on

Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, "Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all."

Mark 9:35

Jesus became a servant and he is the model for our life. He made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. (Philippians 2:7) Being a servant is normally the opposite way of the world where Satan emphasizes power and control. But we are servants for Christ, which means we serve others in this world. Being a servant is very satisfying and fulfilling because we do everything as doing it for the Lord.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters. (Colossians 3:23) This implies that everything we do is service to the Lord by reflecting Christ in all situations. As the God molds our minds and hearts to conform to his Son, our hearts are filled with God’s love and we naturally become a servant of the Lord.

Whoever wants to serve me must follow me, so that my servant will be with me where I am. And my Father will honor anyone who serves me. (John 12:26) When we live as a servant for Christ, he is with us and we are honored by the Father, and when the Lord is pleased we experience his pleasure through the Spirit. There is no life better than being a servant for Christ, guided by the Spirit bringing God’s truth to people to overcome the lies of Satan. It is great victory when someone receives Christ; and it is victory over Satan. We fight Satan in this world through prayer and pointing people to God’s truth.

Today seek to be a humble secure servant for Christ, reflecting his love and compassion. We are blessed when we minister to people, both in their worldly needs and spiritual needs. This is how we show our love for the Lord. Jesus stated: The King will reply, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40)

Prayer: Guide me today to be your servant in everything I do. Keep me humble filled with your love, peace, and joy, and give me your strength to overcome Satan’s temptations. In Jesus name, Amen
