A Light in the World

Posted on

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:14-16

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. (1 John 1:5) Light represents good and darkness represents sin, and this verse indicates there is no sin in God or in heaven. God is light and our Light shines in this world, which means we are reflect Christ.

What does it take to let our Light shine in this world? First we have to have the Light which comes from Christ in us, the Holy Spirit. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (Galatians 5:22 23) Our Light shines when we reveal the fruit of the Spirit to the world.

Our Light is to shine continuously no matter what we are doing or how we are feeling, and letting our Light shine must be first priority in our life. What does it take to make our Light shine, the first priority in our life? Below are steps that help us to achieve first priority for being a Light in this world.

Understand the importance of helping people in their physical and spiritual needs. One soul is worth more than all the riches in the world. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? (Matthew 16:26).

Pray that being a Light in this world will be your divine reason for living. Remember we are a Light first to our family, our Christian family, and to everyone else. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. (Matthew 28:19-20)

Remember to let your Light shine as you go through the day. Make notes, pray, or anything that helps you to remember. The more we let our Light shine, ministering to people, the more our heart changes making it our first priority. Until we start shining our Light and ministering to people personally, it will never become a priority. If you love me, keep my commands. (John 14:15).

Attend Church service and Bible study, and let your Light shine by welcoming and encouraging people. Not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near. (Hebrews 10:25).

Study the Word and pray for the Lord’s help in ministering. Pray that he will lead you to scriptures the person needs to hear. Seek Godly counsel in helping in ministering to others. Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety (Proverbs 11:14).

If we continue in studying the Word, prayer, fellowship, and living as a Light in this world, the more Christ-like we become. And we know Christ’s priority was ministering to everyone.

Today remember to let your Light shine, reflecting the fruit of the Spirit. Note the blessings from the Lord as you minister to others, especially the hurting and the lost. Seek a Bible study such as a Celebrate Recovery meeting.

Prayer: Lord, help me to shine your Light this day and not be pulled away by Satan’s attack on my emotions. Help me to keep my thoughts on things above, and to remember my divine purpose for existing. Especially help me to be a bright Light to my family and my Church family. In Jesus name, Amen
